Enjoying “The Autumn of [X]”: Food, Sports, Reading, and Art in Japan’s Favorite Season ~ 食欲、スポーツ、読書、芸術の秋

Hello everyone, Leo Sensei here!

Japan has four clear seasons: spring(春), summer(夏), autumn(秋), and winter(冬). In contrast, many countries near the equator, such as those in Southeast Asia do not have four seasons. They mostly have a rainy season and a dry season. The temperature stays warm almost all year, which is comfortable, but it is hard to feel the change of seasons like in Japan.

That is why autumn in Japan (roughly from September to November) is so special. The hot summer is over, and the cold winter has not arrived yet. The weather is cool and pleasant. In this nice weather, people like to go outside and stay active. Without the stress of extreme heat or high humidity, it is also easier to enjoy art and creative activities. Plus, autumn is the harvest time for crops planted in spring, so plenty of fresh, delicious food appears in markets.

In Japanese, there is a popular phrase used during this time: “The Autumn of [X]” ([X] no  Aki, ○○の秋). In the “[X]” spot, people usually put words like “Appetite (食欲),” “Sports (スポーツ),” “Reading(読書),” or “Art(芸術).”

Today, let’s look at these popular autumn themes and see how you can enjoy them!

1. [The Autumn of Appetite (食欲の秋)] Enjoying Fresh Foods of the Season

When Japanese people think of autumn, “Shokuyoku no Aki (食欲の秋)” (the autumn of appetite) comes to mind first. Since autumn is the harvest season, you can enjoy many fresh foods like new rice, saury fish, chestnuts, mushrooms, and sweet potatoes.

When I lived abroad, I often missed how deeply Japanese food connects with each season. It is not just about eating when you are hungry; it is about enjoying fresh food at the best time of the year. That is the real joy of eating in Japan during autumn.

2. [The Autumn of Sports (スポーツの秋)] Moving Your Body in Cool Weather

With cool and comfortable weather, autumn is the best time to get active outside. It is a great chance to move your body after taking it easy during the hot summer.

In Japan, many elementary, middle, and high schools hold their sports days (体育祭, Taiikusai) in October. The weather is not too hot, making it ideal for running and outdoor games. Families go to the school grounds to cheer for their children as they do their best in races and group dances.

Even if you are not a student, walking in the fresh morning air or playing tennis on the weekend can make you feel great. Moving your body in the cool breeze is wonderful for your mind and health.

3.[The Autumn of Reading & Art (読書の秋、芸術の秋)] Quiet Times for Your Mind

Because the weather is pleasant and comfortable, autumn gives us the mental energy to read books and appreciate art. As the nights get longer, it becomes a great time to sit down with a good book or visit a museum.

Also, around this time of year, you will see dry pampas grass (すすき, susuki) and colorful fallen leaves everywhere. Looking at these changes in nature gives people a quiet, gentle feeling. It reminds us to care for things that do not last forever, which helps us connect with art on a deeper level.

Reading a book, looking at a nice painting, or listening to music in a quiet room is a simple way to relax and recharge your mind.
